Sublimation Paper: Is It Really That Good?
Subliming transfer papers are made using a substrate that is generally similar to standard papers. You would not be able to tell the difference between normal printer paper and sublimation paper just by touching it or feeling it between your fingers. The substrate that it's built with and how well you treat it will have an effect on how long it lasts before beginning to discolour or decompose..
The Ink: Sublimation transfer paper ink is special because in order to be sublimated, it has to go through a chemical process using heat and pressure. During this process the pigments in the sublimation ink enter into a gaseous state, but retain their original chemical and physical properties. They are then able to bond with the paper completely. Once bonded, the pigment will not rub or peel off from the paper, unless done so intentionally.
The Heat: Sublimation transfer printing requires the use of a heat press to transfer your image to the substrate of your choice. The temperatures and times will vary based on what you are sublimating onto (T-Shirts, mugs , mouse pads, etc, etc).
